When it comes to power and performance, few cars have the reputation or the ability of the Audi RS4. This is the highest performing automobile offered by Audi, other than some very specific, non-consumer vehicles designed for racing. In fact, the RS in the RS4 moniker actually means RennSport, or racing sport, and the vehicle has quite a bit of racing-derived technology aboard. Of course, all that technology comes at a price, but you can find a used Audi RS4 and save a bit of cash. What models might be available to you?
The first generation of the Audi RS4 was built on the B5 body, and was offered only as a wagon (Avant). In addition, it was available with only a single engine and transmission choice. The RS4 used a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 and a 6-speed manual transmission. It also used unique brakes and tires, as well as a different power train than other Audi vehicles.
From 2006 to 2008, the second generation of the Audi RS4 was available, base on the B7 platform. This version still offered only a single engine and transmission choice, but the engine was beefier and the transmission was better. The engine offered was a 4.2-liter DOHC V8, mated to a 6-speed manual Getrag manual transmission. The vehicle was also offered as a 4-door sedan, a 5-door hatchback (Avant) and as a cabriolet variant during this time.
Notably, 2008 was the last year of production for the Audi RS4, as no new models were designed. However, it was transferred to a trim line for many of the automaker’s other offerings, so the line still lives on, at least in essence.
If you want to benefit from buying a used Audi RS4, you can find numerous models from which to choose. The second generation is the most commonly found, both in the US and abroad, though first generation vehicles can also be found to a somewhat lesser extent.
The best option for purchasing one of these vehicles is through a private seller. As the line was discontinued at the end of 2008, most dealerships will not have one on hand. Of course, an Audi or VW dealer might be able to locate a used model for you, but you should expect to pay extra for this service. The best option might just be to look in auto trading magazines, as these will give you access to a wider range of options.
